YOUTH CHOIR

Spreading the Catholic Faith Through Great Music

A PROGRAM OF SAINT JOHN'S SCHOOL OF THEOLOGY SEMINARY
Sponsored by Saint John's Abbey and University, Collegeville, Minnesota

Arrival Day Information – June 22nd

All choir members must either arrive in Collegeville on Monday, June 22nd, 2009 between 12:30 pm and 5:30 pm or at the Minneapolis/St. Paul International Airport between 10 am and 3:30 pm.

Upon arrival on campus, go directly to Summer Events in Mary Hall. As you drive onto campus and head toward the Abbey Church (the large concrete building), Mary Hall will be the last building on your right before you turn into the circle in front of the church. There you will check in with the NCYC staff, receive your folder, campus information, and T-Shirt, sign up for an audition time if you are auditioning for a concert solo or for liturgical cantoring, and receive a room key with direction to your dorm room. Auditions begin on Monday at 4:00 pm for all who can possibly audition then; those who are not able to audition on Monday will be able to on Tuesday or Wednesday, the first two full days of camp.

On Arrival Day, all choristers meet at 6:00 pm under the Bell Banner of the Abbey Church for a brief opening prayer service. All choristers and staff then eat together before our first evening of meetings as a group.

We look forward to welcoming you to Collegeville!

The National Catholic Youth Choir is a liturgically-based choir open to Roman Catholic youth entering 10th-12th grade.  The conductor of the choir is internationally renowned choral clinician Dr. Axel Theimer.  Fr. Anthony Ruff, OSB, a monk of Saint John’s abbey, is the founding director of the choir.  The program takes place each summer on the beautiful wooded grounds of Saint John's Abbey and University in central Minnesota.  What is unique about the National Catholic Youth Choir is its liturgical focus.  The singers learn about the Catholic liturgy and how the treasury of sacred music (Gregorian chant, Palestrina, Mozart, Bruckner, Poulenc, Duruflé...) fits in Catholic worship today.  The choir also sings contemporary and newly-written music, some of it specially commissioned for the NCYC.
