CLOTHING – weather in Minnesota is, at best, unpredictable so you need to be prepared for both hot and cool weather.  We suggest bringing the following.

·         A light jacket that can be worn in the rain (Polar techs work well)

·         Light sweaters or sweatshirts

·         A few sleeveless/short sleeved shirts and or t-shirts (For women low-cut, spaghetti strap tops or tops that reveal bra straps are not acceptable. Shirts should fall below the pant or short waist band, no baring of any midriff is acceptable.)

·         Tennis shoes/sandals or comfortable walking shoe

·         Shorts (modest – when standing with arms hanging down, the length of the short should be no shorter than the tips of your fingertips. Low-riding pants, shorts or skirts that expose underwear and/or skin are also not acceptable.)

·         Jeans (please no rips or tears)

·         Swimsuit (Please no two piece swim suits, tankini’s are fine.)

For non-casual events such as Mass and concerts we would ask that you bring a couple of nice slacks or khakis or skirts/dresses (optional for girls) and a dress shirt or top that is appropriate for Mass.

·         Khakis or dress pants

·         Dress Shirts

·         Skirts/Dresses optional for the girls

·         Dark (navy, black, brown) dress socks or nylons for girls

·         Dress shoes (Each choir member needs to bring a pair of dress shoes or dress sandals to be worn during all concerts/performances (no tennis shoes) with dark (black, brown, navy) socks or nylons for girls.)

CLOTHING PROVIDED: For concerts each member will be provided with an alb that is floor length.
Each choir member will be provided with a t-shirt that they will wear on certain days during camp.  Free laundry facilities are available in the dorms.  Detergent will also be provided, but feel free to bring your own if you have allergies.

RECOMMENDED ITEMS TO BRING: You will also need the following.

·         Alarm clock

·         Personal toiletries, hair dryer

·         A small fan is highly recommended as the dorms are not air conditioned! (For those traveling by air a few fans will be available for use)

·         Spending money (It is not necessary but you may wish to have some for the bookstore and to buy snacks, magazines, souvenirs, etc.)

ROOM INFORMATION: Each dorm room has the following:  two single beds, two desks, towels, bedding, closets, dresser, telephone, and sink with a mirrored cabinet above.  There are two bathrooms with showers on each floor of the dorms.

ROOM KEYS: Room keys are checked out by each chorister upon arrival at St. John’s.  At the end of NCYC room keys must be returned to St. John’s.  If you lose your key, a key penalty of $25 will be assessed to you.

CELL PHONE: Students are free to bring cell phones with them to St. John’s.  They are especially useful for those traveling by air.  Cell phones will be checked in at night with the camp leaders and then can be checked out from the camp leaders during the day. AT NO TIME WILL THEY BE USED DURING REHEARSALS OR PLANNED CAMP/TOUR ACTIVITIES.

The National Catholic Youth Choir is a liturgically-based choir open to Roman Catholic youth entering 10th-12th grade.  The conductor of the choir is internationally renowned choral clinician Dr. Axel Theimer.  Fr. Anthony Ruff, OSB, a monk of Saint John’s abbey, is the founding director of the choir.  The program takes place each summer on the beautiful wooded grounds of Saint John's Abbey and University in central Minnesota.  What is unique about the National Catholic Youth Choir is its liturgical focus.  The singers learn about the Catholic liturgy and how the treasury of sacred music (Gregorian chant, Palestrina, Mozart, Bruckner, Poulenc, Duruflé...) fits in Catholic worship today.  The choir also sings contemporary and newly-written music, some of it specially commissioned for the NCYC.
